The strap is what your watch wears – and like any good piece of clothing, it should fit properly, suit your style and be made from quality materials. Here is how to choose the right leather strap.
Size: it all starts with the lug width
Strap width is measured where it attaches to the case – typically 18, 20 or 22 mm. A strap just 1 mm too narrow immediately looks out of place. Not sure of your watch's size? Get in touch – we'll help you find the right width.
The type of leather changes everything
- Calfskin – the everyday classic: soft, durable and available in every colour.
- Croco-embossed leather – an elegant look for suits and occasions, without the price of exotic leather.
- Nubuck and suede – a sporty, vintage feel, perfect for casual watches.
Colour: a simple rule that always works
Brown suits white, cream and blue dials; black is the safe choice for black and grey dials; cognac and honey tones add warmth to vintage watches. Undecided between two colours? Choose the darker one – it ages more gracefully.
Stitching and details
Tone-on-tone stitching gives quiet elegance; contrast stitching (for example white on blue) adds a sporty character. Also look at the buckle: it should match the case – silver with steel, gold with gold-plated cases.
When should a strap be replaced?
As soon as you see worn edges, cracks around the holes or a persistent odour, the strap has done its job. A worn strap doesn't just look tired – it can also cause the watch to fall off your wrist.
