Watch care: 7 simple rules from the watchmaker

A good watch can accompany you for decades – if you treat it well. In our workshop we see fine watches every day that have suffered from small bad habits. These are the seven rules we recommend to all our customers.

1. Don't wind it on the wrist

Wind a mechanical watch in the morning before putting it on, not while wearing it. That way the crown stays straight and the winding stem is not stressed at an angle.

2. Keep it away from magnets

Speakers, bags with magnetic clasps and even car phone holders can magnetise the hairspring – the watch then often gains several minutes a day. Keep your distance; if you suspect magnetism, demagnetising is a quick workshop service.

3. Be careful with water – even if it says “water resistant”

Water resistance is not permanent: gaskets age and lose their seal. Never operate the crown under water and avoid hot showers with your watch – steam penetrates more easily than cold water. An annual water-resistance test is the cheapest insurance against costly repairs.

4. Clean it gently and regularly

After hot days, a dry microfibre cloth is enough to remove sweat and dust. Clean metal bracelets with a soft brush and a little soapy water – but only if water resistance has been checked.

5. Avoid extreme temperatures

Strong beach sun, saunas and severe cold strain the movement's lubricants and can fade the dial. A watch is not a beach accessory.

6. Store it properly

In its original box or a soft pouch, protected from moisture and dust. Automatic watches you rarely wear benefit from a gentle winding once a month.

7. Never open the caseback yourself

No video tutorial replaces the right tools and trained hands. Opening a watch at home lets dust and moisture in and often damages the gasket. If something is wrong, contact us – the first diagnosis is free.

With these seven rules, your watch will run accurately for many years. And when it is time for a new strap, a professional check – or a new favourite – you will find everything in our watch collection.
