Lugs
The lugs hold the strap; the distance between them gives the strap width.
Crystal
The crystal protects the dial and hands. Mineral glass and the particularly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal are common.
Crown
The crown sets the time and, where present, the date. On many automatic movements it also winds the watch by hand.
Case
The case houses the movement. Its diameter determines how present the watch looks on the wrist.
Movement
The movement is the engine of the watch – mechanical with a balance wheel and mainspring, or electronic with quartz and a battery.
Strap
Leather, metal or rubber: the strap shapes comfort and look – and it can be changed.
